At the weekend we headed to Ravencraig Woods near Bathgate for a little explore with the girls.

We’re always on the lookout for quieter walks, especially ones just off the M8, so this seemed like an easy option.

First Impressions

It’s very easy to find, only about 5–10 minutes from the M8 exit. There’s a small free car park right at the start of the walk.

And when I say small, around 8 cars max I’d say, like a layby parallel to the road. We were lucky and got a space straight away.

No toilets, café, or fancy facilities. Just woodland.

What the Walk Is Like

The paths are mostly narrow woodland trails. It had been raining recently, so it was muddy in a lot of places. Proper Scottish woodland vibes.

There are signposts suggesting two routes (I think a 25-minute and a 60-minute loop), but if I’m honest, the signage wasn’t the clearest. Some posts pointed in random directions and were quite hard to read.

There are lots of little branching paths, so we definitely ended up wandering in a few loops and possibly off the “main” route. But that’s part of the adventure, right?

The woodland had a big section of trees planted in very straight lines, so it feels like a mix of managed forest and wild woodland. No big viewpoints, no water features – but there was a beautiful old stone wall covered in moss that really stood out.

How It Was With Two Reactive Dogs

We went on a Saturday early afternoon, and surprisingly, it was very quiet. There was only one other car when we arrived and one when we left.

We didn’t see any other dogs – we heard one in the distance, but that was it, which is a win for us.

The paths are narrow at the very start, and that section would be tricky if you met another dog head-on. There isn’t much room to step aside there. But once you’re further in, there are plenty of little side paths and space to move off the trail if needed.

Heidi had her usual random zoomies moment, and Pepper was a little pully with all the new smells, but overall it was very manageable.

We walked for about an hour, more of a relaxed wander than a power walk. The girls seemed happy, and that’s what counts.

Would I Recommend It for Reactive Dogs?

Yes – with a couple of notes.

✔ It’s quiet (at least when we went).
✔ There are escape options on most of the route.
✔ No livestock nearby.
✔ Poo bin by the entrance.

But:

✖ The first section by the entrance is narrow.
✖ No benches or obvious quiet “reset” spots.

If you’re looking for somewhere calm to get a sniffy woodland walk in, it’s a good option.

Would We Go Back?

If we were passing, yes.

Would I drive far specifically for it? Probably not.

It’s not a dramatic or memorable walk, and there aren’t any big views or standout features. But it’s peaceful, easy to access, and it did exactly what we needed it to do – a quiet hour outdoors with minimal stress.

I’d give it ⭐⭐⭐☆☆ (2.5 out of 5).

Not bad. Not amazing. But a decent little woodland if you’re nearby and need somewhere low-key.

One small note – I personally wouldn’t love walking there completely alone with two dogs. Woodlands can feel a bit isolated. But that’s just me!
